Olympiakos Pre Match Thoughts

After Saturday’s Abysmal performance I wasn’t surprised to see Wenger make some notable changes for tomorrows final Group B clash. But to leave seven key players at home is quite risky, I understand the need to freshen things up and rest players due to fatigue. But this just seems too familiar going away to a Greek side having already qualified but not guaranteed of top spot. Then having a mare of a start and finishing second in the group. This would open a horrible possibility of facing Dortmund or Barcelona in the Knock-out Stages which I would not look forward to one bit.

If we get out thought and outplayed by Swansea then we would be in big trouble.

We have left at home Per Mertesacker, Arteta, Cazorla, Wilshere, Podolski, Walcott and Giroud.

The travelling party hasn’t been announced in full but I would expect Szczesny, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey and Gervinho out of the first team. Then they are more than likely to be joined by Fringe players like Coquelin, Arshavin, Chamakh. the rest of the 18 man squad will be made up of youngsters I would imagine.

Since this will be a very experimental selection I am hoping he decides to try a different system to the 4-3-3 mutation he has played all season and is falling flat on its face. no more square pegs in round holes please Wenger. simply decided on an Eleven and put them in a system that makes sense, no more Centre Midfielders playing on the wing., keep it simple and we just might finish top of our group.

After what occurred on Saturday I wouldn’t say I was steeped in optimism but I am hopeful of a performance because god do we need one. They need to dust themselves off put the Swansea game behind them and get ready to go.

As there will be no koscielny due to injury and other absentees I can only see our back four consisting of Jenkinson (RB) Gibbs(LB) and Djourou (CB) partnered by Vermaelen (CB). Coquelin and Ramsey to “Protect” in front of our back four allowing Jenkinson and Gibbs to go forward. Eisfeld who was very impressive in pre-season and in Carling cup games has definitely earned a start, I would also go with Rosicky as he needs the games and this is an ideal opportunity. Oxlade-chamberlain on the right hand side. and take your pick between Chamakh and Gervinho would probably go with Gervinho as he is more mobile. That is one area of many we seriously need to strengthen come January.

feel free to share your opinions as always.

Changing that many players at once is always a risk, especially when confidence is in short supply, plus olympiakos on their own patch is a hard game for anyone, also leaving yourself open to finishing as a runner up, giving yourself a harder 2 leg tie in the next round is a strange decision having already being guaranteed of qualification already
